Face a Face 36"x48"
Oil Painting 2024
In my submission for the David Shepard Wildlife Artist of the Year contest, I sought to capture the essence of the leopard, an iconic symbol of grace and power in the natural world. Standing tall on a large 36"x48" canvas, this majestic creature commands attention, its presence signifying the utmost importance of its conservation.
Set against a backdrop of teal-colored jungle leaves, the leopard sits poised, not hidden or ready to pounce, but simply observing the world around it. The choice of teal, an unrealistic hue, serves to elevate the majesty and wonder of this incredible animal, emphasizing its significance in the delicate balance of its ecosystem.
Rendered in a grisaille technique, the fur of the leopard appears colorless, symbolizing the often invisible agency of these creatures as human societies encroach upon their habitats. Yet, despite this muted portrayal, the eyes of the leopard are painted in that same majestic teal, serving as a focal point of emphasis.
Through the piercing gaze of those teal eyes, the audience is confronted with the vulnerability of this magnificent predator, compelling them once again to pause, to stare, and ultimately, to care. This painting is not merely a representation of a leopard; it is a call to action, a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the precious wildlife that shares our planet.
